My name is Mike Krzyzewski. I have the honor to coach the Duke’s men’s basketball team.
We kind of built our program where our family was always involved. It’s not dad’s job, it’s our program.
Coaching philosophy is constantly changing. Got to stay fresh and you have to be interactive with the guys, so you need the mobility to be out there all of the time.
I like being outside, gardening and walking my dog Blue and I. I knew that I was having problems because I had groin pain. When I finally got it diagnosed my doctor, he explained everything and said it’s coming from your hip and I said what could you do and he said you could get a hip replacement. I said I can’t do it right now. You know, I’m getting ready to start my season.
I can remember him walking out onto the basketball court, without the hip replacements and limping. He was in so much pain it’s changing his outlook on everything.
I’m sitting on a stool because I can’t walk around, yelling instruction and I said I can’t live that way. I was thinking my career might be over so a couple of days after we lost in the final four, I was in the hospital and had it done.
I really think we lost the national championship that year, because I didn’t get my hip replaced earlier.
After rehabbing for one month I wanted to make sure that I gave it time.
It actually felt good to work out. I’d have given that up, you know, when I was having a bad hip.
When my other hip, it was going to lead to another year, I got it done right away.
And now, this wave of stuff that you use to do comes back in your life.
I’m doing more. I’ve now coached 13 more years with this hip and 10 with this. I can coach some more when I got my hip we didn’t have grandchildren. I can’t even imagine me limping around and not being able to be with my 8 grandchildren.
Someone who’s saying, well I can get by with it, will get by.
The hip replacement allowed me to do…not to get by.
