Patient Specific Plate Contouring

Synthes Patient Specific Plate Contouring (PSPC) is a service in which plates, available in the Synthes CMF catalog, are adapted to a patient's anatomy based on CT data provided by a surgeon.

Plates

Multiple plate options are available for the Synthes Patient Specific Plate Contouring (PSPC) service. Surgeons can select straight, single angle, or double angle plates for the following:

  • 2.0 mm thick MatrixMANDIBLE
  • 2.5 mm thick MatrixMANDIBLE
  • 2.8 mm thick MatrixMANDIBLE
  • 2.0 mm Mandible Locking Plate (MLP)
  • 2.4 mm Locking Reconstruction Plate (LRP)
  • Condylar Head Add-On is also available.

Bone Models

The 3-D anatomic bone models are modeled per the request of the surgeon.

Options include the following:

PSPC uses three-dimensional anatomic bone models made from acrylic resin using stereolithography. The key feature of the acrylic resin is that it can be produced in two colors. PSPC models highlight the tooth roots and nerves to ensure that the plate is contoured in consideration of these anatomical features.

  • Opposite side mirrored
  • Mandible with maxilla for condylar head

Features and benefits of PSPC

Providing the precontoured plate to the surgeon before the surgery date may decrease the operating time on the average by about 1.5 hours.[1]

  • Advanced shipment of the precontoured plate and bone model enables teh surgeon to plan complex surgeries in advance of the procedure.
  • Plates are contoured following AO techniques.
  • No reverse bends are used. Reverse bends may result in early fatigue of the plate material microstructure resulting in possible premature plate failure.

PSPC Ordering Process

  1. Step 1: Surgeon obtains CT scan
    NOTE: DePuy Synthes Companies PSPC plates are contoured using CT data, which is obtained from the hospital radiology department.
    See recommended scanning protocol.
  2. Step 2: CT scan sent to PSPC
    Notes:
    Submit patient scan data (CT/CBCT scans, intraoral Scans, plaster models, etc.) with completed Request for Service (RFS) per the instructions on the RFS form.
  3. Step 3: Communication with Surgeon
    The surgeon will be contacted directly via email and/or by phone to ensure that the surgeons's requirements are understood and can be met.
  4. Step 4: Purchase order obtained
  5. Step 5: Plate is adapted
    The plate is adapted per the anatomic bone model based on the CT/CBCT Scan data or per the planned reconstruction.
