WARSAW, IN (June 16, 2008) – DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. (DePuy) has unveiled several new technologies through the company’s state-of-the-art facility, the Innovation Zone (i-Zone). These technologies are engineered to speed patient recovery, enhance operating room efficiency, and further improve long-term results.

The technologies featured in the i-Zone include the Anterior Approach to total hip replacement, a Computer Assisted Surgery System, and the newest offerings in high performance instruments for total knee replacement surgery.

The Anterior Approach makes total hip replacement surgery an option for patients who were traditionally not candidates because of weight or build. The Anterior Approach allows surgeons to work between the muscles, without detaching them from the hip or thighbones. When these important muscles are left relatively undisturbed, patients may have immediate post-operative stability, less pain and a faster recovery. 1

Ci™ Essential is the new generation of computer-assisted surgery software for total hip and knee replacement surgery. This latest development in computer-navigated joint replacement offers enhanced customization options for personalized surgery to meet the demands of both surgeons and patients. Computer-assisted surgery gives a better correction of alignment of the leg and orientation of the implants compared with the conventional knee replacement surgery technique. 2 Computer-assisted surgery can reduce overall patient blood loss compared to conventional knee replacement surgery. 3

Sigma® High Performance Instruments aredesigned for contemporary total knee replacement to provide enhanced efficiency, precision and flexibility. Through a program of continuous development, DePuy’s single system of High Performance instruments support surgeons’ approach to knee replacement surgery. This is DePuy Orthopaedics’ largest introduction of instrumentation in a decade.

As with any medical treatment, individual results may vary. Only an orthopaedic surgeon can determine whether an orthopaedic implant is an appropriate course of treatment. There are potential risks, and recovery takes time. The performance of the new joint depends on weight, activity level, age and other factors.
